How to add a custom virtual background in Zoom
Upload your own Zoom background, switch it during a meeting, or set team controls without turning the page into a generic background gallery.

Fastest Zoom path
Desktop app > profile picture > Settings > Video & effects > Virtual backgrounds > plus icon. In a meeting, use the arrow next to Video > Video & effect settings > Virtual backgrounds > plus icon.
Before you start
The reader wants the Zoom upload path for desktop, in-meeting, mobile, or web, plus help when the setting is disabled or the background looks bad.
- The virtual background setting must be enabled for your Zoom account.
- Use the Zoom Workplace desktop app for the most reliable upload flow.
- Admins can restrict custom uploads, videos, AI backgrounds, or require approved backgrounds.
- A 16:9 image, usually 1920 x 1080, is the safest choice for a professional background.
Desktop app
Add a Zoom virtual background before the meeting
This saves the background in Zoom before you are live, which is safer than searching your files in front of a client.

Desktop upload path
Zoom puts uploads behind the plus icon in the Virtual backgrounds tab.
Click path
- 1Profile picture
- 2Settings
- 3Video & effects
- 4Virtual backgrounds
- 5Plus icon
- 1
Open Zoom settings
Sign in to the Zoom desktop app, click your profile picture, and open Settings.
- 2
Go to Video & effects
Select Video & effects, then open the Virtual backgrounds area below your preview.
- 3
Upload with the plus icon
Click the plus icon and select your image. Choose it in the background list to apply it.
If the virtual background tab appeared only after your admin enabled it, sign out and back in so Zoom refreshes account settings.
Live meeting
Change a Zoom background during a meeting
The in-call route is short, but it is easy to click the wrong video menu. Start from the arrow beside the Video button.

In-meeting upload path
Use the Video arrow, not the main Start Video button, to reach effect settings.
Click path
- 1Video arrow
- 2Video & effect settings
- 3Virtual backgrounds
- 4Plus icon
- 5Choose image
- 1
Open video settings from the toolbar
During the meeting, click the arrow next to Start Video or Stop Video.
- 2
Choose Video & effect settings
Open Virtual backgrounds under the preview.
- 3
Upload or switch backgrounds
Click the plus icon to add a new image, or select one you already uploaded.
Other Zoom flows
Use Zoom mobile, web, and admin controls
Zoom has more background routes than Teams or Meet. That is useful, but it also means account settings can change what the user sees.
- 1
Zoom mobile
In a meeting, tap More, then Settings, then Virtual backgrounds. Tap the plus icon to add an image. On iOS, Zoom also lists an outside-meeting route through Settings, Video & effects, Background & effects.
- 2
Zoom web app
In the web app, join or start a meeting, click the arrow beside Start Video or Stop Video, choose Background, and use the add icon.
- 3
Zoom admin settings
Admins can enable Virtual background in the Zoom web portal under Account Settings, Meeting, In Meeting (Advanced). They can allow custom uploads, restrict uploads, use defaults, or require backgrounds.
How to choose an image that looks realistic
Searchers often say “fake background,” but the useful answer is how to hide the real room without making the replacement obvious.
Image checklist
- Use 16:9 framing; 1920 x 1080 is a dependable starting point.
- Avoid tiny text because Zoom compression makes it hard to read.
- If you use a green screen, make sure the screen is evenly lit and select the correct screen color.
- Keep the background quieter than your face. Zoom calls are not billboards.
- Test on the same laptop camera you use for calls, not only on a high-resolution design preview.
Common mistakes
- Using the main Video button instead of the arrow beside it during a meeting.
- Leaving green screen mode on when you do not have a green screen.
- Assuming the web app and desktop app expose identical background controls.
- Uploading a branded slide instead of a room image with subtle brand cues.
